Oniwasoto Fukuwauchi

Oniwasoto Fukuwauchi

A dessert inspired by the Japanese event of Setsubun.

Suhama coated in roasted soybean powder, resembling beans, are placed in a small box alongside sweet candied green peas. Suhama is a traditional sweet made by blending starch syrup, gyuhi. It has a pleasantly chewy, mochi-like texture.
Accompanying them are two delicate dry confections made from yam—one shaped like an oni (demon) and the other like an otafuku (a symbol of good fortune).

Enjoy this treat while chanting "Oni wa soto! Fuku wa uchi!"—meaning "Demons out! Fortune in!" —to wish for a good health.
